How It Works

Join us for the second annual Community Well-Being Challenge to explore the many accessible resources, events, and activities that lead to greater longevity. The 2024 Community Well-Being Challenge launched in January and runs through December 31.

Thrive Umpqua and dozens of community partners are offering free classes, hosting exciting events, offering unique exploration opportunities, and much more. Participants are invited to participate in at least six well-being activities throughout the year that correspond to the six Longevity Principles: Move More, Connect, Live on Purpose, Plant Slant, Unwind and Positive Outlook.

No manual tracking or logging of activities required! Thrive Umpqua tracks your attendance at each of the events/activities and you are entered to win gift cards and prizes each month and for the final Grand Prizes at the end of the Challenge!

Eligible activities are communicated through monthly emails, periodic text message reminders (for those who opt in), and on this webpage. Check out the Upcoming Events section below.

January Events

 

Origami and Teatime
Thursday, January 9th, 4:30-5:30pm
Thrive Umpqua Office: 556 SE Jackson Street, Roseburg 

Unwind and Connect during the hustle and bustle of the season
with an origami paper star activity and tea. One of the primary benefits of making origami is its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Origami requires concentration and focus, which helps to calm the mind and reduce anxiety. The repetitive folding of paper can also be meditative, similar to the practice of yoga or mindfulness meditation. No registration or supplies needed, just show up! 

MLK Day River Clean Up
Monday, January 15th, 10am-2pm
Stewart Park Pavilion, Roseburg 

This upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UCA is hosting a Day of Service in Roseburg! For nearly 30 years, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact increased as more Americans embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities where we live, work, and play. This upcoming January, thousands of Americans of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds will participate in service projects to honor Dr. King’s legacy on MLK Day of Service.

Join Thrive Umpqua and UCC Athletics in coming out to improve the Thrive Umpqua adopted trail in Stewart Park (from the Duck Pond to the YMCA)! Trash grabbers, bags, gloves, and refreshments will be provided.

Family Wellness Wonderland

The Family Wellness Wonderland will feature community partners offering information about topics like nutrition, home visiting programs, STEAM learning, mental health providers, and disaster preparedness. There will be plenty of games and activities.

Community Well-Being Challenge Kick Off Event – Dr. Michael Greger at UCC!
Tuesday, February 6th: 6:30pm
UCC Jacoby Auditorium 

Dr. Greger, author of “How Not to Die,” will be at UCC Jacoby Auditorium on Feb 6, 6:30pm, presenting insights from his new book, “How Not to Age.” He shares natural ways to slow aging, discusses diets of the healthiest populations, and offers tips for preserving brain and body function. Sponsored by UC-VEG, Thrive Umpqua, UCC Nursing, and Roseburg Residency Program.

UC-VEG Cooking Class: Decadent Chocolate Desserts
Monday, February 12th: 5:30-7:00pm
Ford Room, Roseburg Public Library, Roseburg

Register early for UC-VEG’s plant-based cooking class with limited space for 50 people. The upcoming class features a theme of Decadent Chocolate Desserts with cooking demonstrators guiding participants on kitchen preparation, ingredient shopping and dish creation. Gateway Garden Work Bee

Gateway Community Garden, 1614 SE Stephens Ave, Roseburg

As the new season approaches, we will be gathering as a community to help clean up, weed, organize, and make repairs at the Gateway Community Garden. This garden provides a space for those without land to grow food, allowing them to connect with the earth and understand the origins of their food. Snacks, water, and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves. Join us for a rewarding volunteer opportunity! Your participation will make a positive impact! 

Painting Your Passion: Exploring Purpose Through Art Workshop
Tuesday, February 20th, 5:30-7pm
Thrive Umpqua Office, 556 SE Jackson Street, Roseburg 

Embark on a playful exploration of self-discovery and creativity! Participate in this ‘unwind’ event hosted by Thrive Umpqua, led by Art Therapist Heidi from Juniper Tree. Delve into the longevity principles, and explore purpose through paints and other materials.  Share your creations if you’d like and celebrate the unique expressions of your purpose. Heidi provides all the necessary materials for the event, and take-home tips guarantee continued exploration on your creative journey.  All materials will be provided, but there are a limited number of seats! Land of Umpqua Geocache Series Kickoff Event
Saturday, February 3rd from 9am-2pm
Stewart Park Large Pavilion, Roseburg

Hosted by Roseburg Parks and Recreation, the Discover Roseburg 13 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series kick-off is a free, family-friendly event designed to draw people of all ages outside to experience more of the city and its businesses. You’re invited to gather at 9 a.m. where Roseburg Parks and Recreation staff will give out verbal instructions and coordinate-containing “passports” for a high-tech geocaching treasure hunt.

Downtown Wellness Break: Walking Group and Yoga
Every other Wednesday at 12:20pm, January 17th thru February 28th
Meet at Thrive Umpqua Office, 556 SE Jackson St, Roseburg

Thrive Umpqua is partnering up with Zen Den Yoga Studio to provide a Downtown Wellness Break! Meet at the Thrive Umpqua office for a 30-minute walk around downtown Roseburg from 12:20-12:50pm. The walk will end at Zen Den Yoga Studio with a free, 1 hour, yoga-sesh* from 1-2pm!
Become a regular mover or drop it when you can for whichever parts you can! All are welcome, no registration is necessary. Just show up! *Those who want to do yoga should bring their own yoga mat, blanket, or towel, and reusable water bottles are always encouraged!

Starting Monday, March 4th

Take the Meatless Monday Challenge starting Monday, March 4th- it’s an easy and delicious way to turn your healthy eating goals into reality.

During the challenge, you will receive a Monday morning email with tips on: 

  • Making your favorite meals…plant-based
  • Adding more vegetables to your meals
  • Raiding your pantry to make cheap meals
  • Learning basic ‘no recipe’ and ‘no-cook’ plant-based meals

-Bring a plant-based dish (no meat, seafood, eggs or dairy) to share. Or you’re welcome to bring a simple food, such as berries or cherry tomatoes.

Community Baby Shower

The HCCSO team and the Perinatal Task Force partners are pleased to welcome new families who are expecting or have recently had a baby to the Community Baby Shower. This open house, drop-in style event will feature booths with care providers who will provide information on resources for basic needs, breastfeeding, infant CPR, infant massage, car seat installation and MORE! Spanish interpretation is available at the event. Visit the Thrive Umpqua booth for self care goodies, refreshments and a chance to win a massage from Calendula Wellness.

 

Umpqua Valley Tennis Center Open House

Free Pickleball, Tennis, and Ping Pong! Join Thrive Umpqua and Umpqua Valley Tennis Center for a Saturday of family fun as part of the Community Well-Being Challenge! Loaner binoculars are available for adults and children. We will have local volunteer birders in attendance, but we also encourage the group to help spot and ID birds. Shamrock Quest

There’s still time to participate in this fun, family-friendly geocache adventure hosted by Roseburg Parks and Recreation! Ready to make a difference? Take the Rethink Food Waste Challenge that kicks off on Monday, April 8th! We’ll provide you with weekly tips on how to make small shifts in how you shop, store, and prepare food, so you can toss less, eat well, and save money. Grow Your Own Microgreens: Gardening Workshop

In this free, hands-on gardening workshop, UC-VEG will be teaching basic skills on how to grow sprouts and microgreens. There will be a recipe idea for you to sample, inspired by microgreens. Real Art and Faux Cocktails

Enjoy an art walk and faux cocktails! This fun evening starts at the Stockyard Social Hall located in Historic Downtown Oakland. Visit local businesses and watch community artists in action. Happier Hour Series: Featuring Origami Night

Unwind at the Thrive Umpqua office—everyone is welcome to join to make some simple origami designs! This is the first in the series of ‘Happier Hour’ events. Relax with some non-alcoholic beverages and great company. Future events in the series may include basket weaving, sound healing, and more! Stay tuned! All materials will be provided—just show up!

Love Your Neighborhood Event:  Downtown Clean Up

Last Wednesday of the month: June 26th, July 31st, August 28th

Meet at the Thrive Umpqua Office:  556 SE Jackson St, Roseburg

Join us for a monthly downtown cleanup event! Drop in between 5pm-6pm on the last Wednesday of the month. We’ll provide all the necessary supplies—garbage bags, gloves, pickers, and even healthy snacks. Just show up and lend a hand as we focus on cleaning up each downtown block, addressing areas in need. Let’s show the neighborhood some love together!

dMini Challenge: Quench Hydration Challenge

Starting Monday, July 1st 

We are excited to launch our next mini challenge in the Community Well-Being Challenge on July 1st – this is one is all about hydration!
Sign up for the 4-week Quench Challenge to boost your daily water intake. You set your daily goal, track your H2O intake over four weeks, and we’ll provide fun prizes and encouragement along the way! Two grand prize winners will receive $50 gift cards to Booster Juice and Good to Go 🍓🍋🍊
We’ll “dive” right in on Monday, July 1st! Registration will stay open through Friday, July 5th.

Yoga in the Park

Saturdays starting July 6th thru August 31st at 10am

Stewart Park, Roseburg 

Spend your Saturday mornings this summer decompressing with a yoga class while surrounded by nature and the sound of the Umpqua river. This event is FREE to the community and takes place in Stewart Park on the lawn east of the Half Shell. Participants should get there early to sign in and come dressed in comfortable, stretchy clothing with a towel/blanket/yoga mat and water. Each week one lucky participant will win a gift certificate to a local restaurant/cafe! Yoga in the Park is co-sponsored by Roseburg Parks & Recreation, Zen Den Yoga and Thrive Umpqua!

ODHS First Thursday Event

First Thursday is located outdoors between the months of May-September at the ODHS Parking lot.  Stop by our booth at this monthly gathering of community resources for information on all of our well-being programs, copies of the newly released Umpqua Grown Guide and practical ways to get involved in the “Love Your Neighborhood” Campaign!  

Monthly Bird Field Trip with Audubon Society

Come out of your cozy nests, and enjoy the morning with us! People new to birding are always welcome to join in, as are families with children. Loaner binoculars are available for adults and children. We will have local volunteer birders in attendance, but we also encourage the group to help spot and ID birds. Monthly Prize Drawings

All participants who have completed at least one activity or event that month will be entered into a random prize drawing! Winners will be notified by by email and text message (if they opted in to text message alerts).

Grand Prize Packages

All participants who complete at least six activities by December 31st and a short final survey will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing featuring outdoor excursions, family friendly activity vouchers, fitness and wellness gear, gift certificates to local eateries and grocery stores, and more! The lucky winners be announced in early January 2025!
